Audio Codec ’97, also known as AC97 is an audio encoding and decoding standard created by Intel Corporation in 1997. The audio controllers that incorporate AC97 controls and drivers work with many plug and play audio components. This system was replaced technology wise by Intel High Definition audio in 2004. Yet, the fact is that AC97 is still a standard that is widely used in computers of many types.

AC97 is used by the audio programs shipped with Windows XP and Vista, though it is one of the background systems that most people are unaware exist. The programs to drive the AC97 come from different sources and have been known to have some unwanted effects in a system, including unwanted sound effects when some settings are active.

One problem encountered by AC97 was caused by an automatic update released by Microsoft. The update shut down the AC97 completely for a time. This problem was fixed with a later update. However, another problem with the standard developed from the three color coded interfaces for headphones, stereo speakers, and multiple speaker systems. The speakers in a stereo system or headphones would work only as background speakers for a 3D system, meaning they would play music but no vocals. The system would have to be configured for multi speaker systems in order to work properly.

The Need to Update Drivers for AC97

Because AC97 is the standard audio controller for use in many different computers and across different platforms, boards that incorporate the standard come from a variety of different manufacturers. Each board requires its own different driver to make it interface with the system properly.

As time passes, new motherboard configurations and new boards are created that require updated drivers in order to function properly. In addition, new drivers are created from time to time to provide fixes for problems as they are learned about and reported to manufacturers. Each new driver version will have a different patch built into it for a different problem.

There are also changes in output devices, new speakers and configurations for audio equipment to hook to the computer require slightly different software interfaces to make the new equipment work with the system so that all parts function properly.

One of the features that people must work to achieve is keeping their computer up to date, with the latest version of the AC97 driver for the boards that are used and the operating system in their computer to ensure the proper function of all their audio components.

While AC97 is a standard audio controller used widely in computer equipment, there are several different versions the technology available. In order to assure proper functioning with the system in use, it is important to keep the latest versions of the drivers on the computer to ensure that all parts of the audio system work together as expected. Problems come up from time to time that require a software patch to be included in a new driver version of the driver to fix the problems, often before most people encounter them.

We will go over the basics of Windows XP audio driver downloads, so that you will have a general idea of where to begin.

Do I Need to Download a New Windows XP Audio Driver?

First of all, let’s find out if you are really a candidate for a Windows XP audio driver download.

Is your computer system delivering poor sound quality?

Does the audio start and then stop abruptly for no reason?

Are you experiencing audio problems, such as no sound coming from your headphones or speakers?

Does the sound coming from your PC seem muddled or distorted?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then you definitely fit the criteria for a person in need of a Windows XP audio driver download. For those who already have a driver on their system, you will probably just need an upgrade of some sort to replace an older, outdated version. The good news is that most Windows XP audio driver downloads are available at no cost. So, how should you go about this process?

Finding the Right Driver

Generally speaking, there are two different ways you can search for Windows XP audio driver downloads on the Internet. The first method involves the use of a search engine to help you locate the exact driver you need.

1.) Type “Windows XP Audio Drivers Download” or “Windows XP Audio Driver Downloads” into the search query box.

2.) Thousands of relevant search results will be returned to you in a matter of seconds. Browse through some of the Web pages until you find the one you’re looking for.

3.) Before you start the download process, make sure the driver you have selected compliments your computer brand and model as well as your current operating system. You should also make sure that you are getting the latest version of the driver.

4.) Once the driver is installed on your system, you will need to restart the computer in order for the changes to take effect.

5.) When all’s said and done, test your new software to ensure that it’s working properly.

If you are still experiencing audio or sound problems after you have downloaded the driver, you should contact the manufacturer of your system. A technical support group should be able to walk you through the necessary steps in order to repair the problem.

As stated earlier, there is also another way you can search for the available Windows XP audio driver downloads. Some people feel that the search engine method is a rather daunting task due to the vast number of returned results. If this is the case for you as well, you should consider downloading an automated driver detective tool, which will automatically search for the most updated drivers and then guide you through a simple installation process.

Regardless of which search method you chose, Windows XP audio driver downloads are usually the key to solving your computer’s sound problems.
